Summary

Wealth。 Power。 Murder。 Magic。 Alex Stern is back and the Ivy League is going straight to hell in #1 New York Times bestselling author Leigh Bardugo's Hell Bent

Find a gateway to the underworld。 Steal a soul out of hell。 A simple plan, except people who make this particular journey rarely come back。 But Galaxy “Alex” Stern is determined to break Darlington out of purgatory―even if it costs her a future at Lethe and at Yale。

Forbidden from attempting a rescue, Alex and Dawes can’t call on the Ninth House for help, so they assemble a team of dubious allies to save the gentleman of Lethe。 Together, they will have to navigate a maze of arcane texts and bizarre artifacts to uncover the societies’ most closely guarded secrets, and break every rule doing it。 But when faculty members begin to die off, Alex knows these aren’t just accidents。 Something deadly is at work in New Haven, and if she is going to survive, she’ll have to reckon with the monsters of her past and a darkness built into the university’s very walls。

Thick with history and packed with Bardugo’s signature twists, Hell Bent brings to life an intricate world full of magic, violence, and all too real monsters。

I can’t believe it’s been so long since Ninth House came out! This sequel has been very highly anticipated。 It picks right up amidst the aftermath of the previous year’s events。 The character development was exactly what I wanted to see。 Alex lets down more of her barriers and deepens her bonds with Dawes, Mercy, Turner, everyone。 How endearing! Within this, we also got to explore how Alex’s friends are dealing with their traumas from last year。 I’m glad Hell Bent doesn’t brush over its side characters。 I like how low-key the relationships can be。 When you pay attention, you can see how bonded Alex and Dawes have become。The pacing is slow at first, but it made sense to me。 Bardugo makes enough references to the first book that it jogs your memory and let's you ease back into this world without being overwhelmed by new information。 Alex still thinks about Tara's death, and how differently she was treated when you compare her murder to more ‘beloved’ victims。 Details like this mean Hell Bent is very much intertwined with the events of Ninth House, along with staying true to its themes。 And now onto the spoilery stuff。 (view spoiler)[I did have reservations at how quickly ‘outsiders’ like Mercy and Tripp accept they’re along for the ride when the gang walks the Gauntlet and enters hell。 Especially Mercy, who previously had no idea magic was real。 I felt the leadup to them finally freeing Darlington could have been trimmed down to allow for more scenes to strengthen the trust between Alex and Mercy。 Bardugo put an impressive amount of effort into portraying Yale and all its occultish clues scattered around campus。 I know she went there, but you can really tell she loves the place。 The way the characters talk about all the history, literature and architecture feels welcoming to the reader, rather than something that would only make sense to people who know New Haven。 All the clues lead the gang to hell where, after two failed attempts, they finally rescue Darlington。 I’m pleased, because at one point I was worried they wouldn’t manage it。 This book is centered around Alex and the gang dealing with demons - the one that imprisoned Darlington, along with entities they pick up along the journey。 Again, she does a great job at keeping the book on course and on theme。 This world has massive potential for all sorts of magic, but she doesn’t try to introduce too much too soon。 I was relieved when they finally rescued Darlington, but I think it came a little too late in the book。 I wanted more reunion and resolution between him, Alex and Dawes, but there wasn’t enough time for it due to all the other plot threads to take care of。 Especially the unresolved Alex/Darlington romance - how was this still not talked about, lol。 The hell scenes could have been better too。 Everything happened too quickly there。 There was a lot of jumping between moments, without letting the sheer horror of the place flow through the scene。 Too many witty lines and not enough truly scary atmosphere。Tripp becoming a friendly demon was a bit silly。 The plot had too many loose ends where each one needed a different ending。 He felt a little superfluous compared to the existing bonds between the other characters。 But I did like the depth Bardugo gave him。 I just didn't feel we needed his dramatic disappearance where he ends up being eaten by a demon。 I suppose she's setting something up there for the next book? Possibly。 (hide spoiler)]Generally Hell Bent did what I expected it to do。 The reasons it produced for having a third book in this series (and therefore dragging the romance out) are thin though。 This could have been trimmed down into a duology。 So the third book will really have to impress me and expand the plot beyond closing the Gauntlet and killing a few demons。 We shall see。 But the thing is, I enjoy Leigh’s writing enough that I don’t really mind overall - these books are tonnes of fun! They have such a perfect dark academia magical urban fantasy vibe。 Lucky us, Leigh is visiting London soon so I can get her to sign my copy of Ninth House too :) What a great new release to start the year with。 4。25 stars, but who knows, that might change with the sequel。 。。。more

I really wanted to like this book more。 I recently reread Ninth House so I was ready to go on this journey to Hell to save my main man Darlington。 But I was disappointed with the pacing and the general direction of the plot in this sequel。 I was also hoping this would be a duology, but alas this book has a serious case of “second book syndrome”。There were enjoyable moments。 We get to spend more time with side characters(my babies Pammie, Turner, and most surprisingly Trip!) and learn more of the I really wanted to like this book more。 I recently reread Ninth House so I was ready to go on this journey to Hell to save my main man Darlington。 But I was disappointed with the pacing and the general direction of the plot in this sequel。 I was also hoping this would be a duology, but alas this book has a serious case of “second book syndrome”。There were enjoyable moments。 We get to spend more time with side characters(my babies Pammie, Turner, and most surprisingly Trip!) and learn more of their backstories which I liked。 And just like the first book Leigh managed to redirect my attention so she could surprise me and elicit a gasp or two。 But along those lines, we get more of Mercy and there was something about how conveniently she gets brought into the gang that annoyed me。 Alex seems too ridiculously powerful and I’m just not interested in the idea of a third book。 The tone of this book just didn’t feel right。 And I can’t quite put my finger on why that is。 Maybe it was the sheer amount of mysteries to solve。 Maybe it was just hard to believe that Alex could go through all that chaos and still manage to get her schoolwork done。 Who knows。 。。。more

I much preferred the second installment of this series to the first。 The story moved quicker and while still dark, has undertones of hope。 I also have a SERIOUS REQUEST of Ms Bardugo for book 3 but if I wrote it, then that would be a big spoiler

A phenomenal sequel to Ninth House。 I definitely enjoyed this more than the first。 It was so gut wrenching and heartbreaking peppered with moments of loyalty and friendship。 The one thing I missed a bit from the first book was hearing more about the other societies, it made sense that it wasn’t there, but I still missed it。 This book is not for the faint of heart, but it’s definitely an excellent and wild ride。

Feels like this book was stretched a little thin in terms of what it wanted to do with character development and plot twists。 Really hope there will be a sequel!

If I had to choose, the most likable characters are Turner and Trip - their murder past is the most interesting chapter in this book。 Hadn't seen that coming。0。5 bonus solely for Ninth House's sake。 This book is such a disappointment。 I hoped for the quality of the first half of Ninth house but instead got the second half。 I have to admit I wasn't that surprised。 (view spoiler)[Though I was truly disappointed that the book didn't get better after Darlington's return and I didn't like him half as much as I had in the first book。 Even the romance turned sour。 (hide spoiler)]I don't know if this book is plot-full or is it just me turning the speed too fast。 It somehow feels both fast pace plot full and plotless at the same time。Also the magic is all over the place。 Nothing makes sense, the power just came and went as the author wished to without any supporting logic or magic system。Its magic is too messy and overall too shallow to be considered as dark academia。 BTW, I re-watched half an episode of How to get away with murder today cuz why not。 3 minutes in I know that's peak dark academia, no one can wish for more。 Why isn't it based on a book and why doesn't Shonda write books。。。 I'm sad。My reviews on Ninth house: https://www。goodreads。com/review/show。。。 。。。more

Leigh Bardugo returns to New Haven with this exciting and action-packed sequel to Ninth House。 Alex Stern and the gang are working to get their golden boy back, and this book could not have been a better tribute to found family, history, and literature。 Hell Bent was such a great read and I didn't want it to end—and I'm sincerely hoping that this is not the end of Alex's story。Leigh Bardugo is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Ninth House and the creator of the Grishaverse (now a Netfl Leigh Bardugo returns to New Haven with this exciting and action-packed sequel to Ninth House。 Alex Stern and the gang are working to get their golden boy back, and this book could not have been a better tribute to found family, history, and literature。 Hell Bent was such a great read and I didn't want it to end—and I'm sincerely hoping that this is not the end of Alex's story。Leigh Bardugo is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Ninth House and the creator of the Grishaverse (now a Netflix original series), which spans the Shadow and Bone trilogy, the Six of Crows duology, the King of Scars duology—and much more。 Her short fiction has appeared in multiple anthologies, including the Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy。 She lives in Los Angeles and is an associate fellow of Pauli Murray College at Yale University。 You can find her online at LeighBardugo。com。 You can find more of my reviews of her work here。 Find a gateway to the underworld。 Steal a soul out of hell。 A simple plan, except people who make this particular journey rarely come back。 But Galaxy "Alex" Stern is determined to break Darlington out of purgatory—even if it costs her a future at Lethe and at Yale。 Forbidden from attempting a rescue, Alex and Dawes can't call on the Ninth House for help, so they assemble a team of dubious allies to save the gentleman of Lethe。 Together, they will have to navigate a maze of arcane texts and bizarre artifacts to uncover the societies' most closely guarded secrets, and break every rule doing it。 But when faculty members begin to die off, Alex knows these aren't just accidents。 Something deadly is at work in New Haven, and if she is going to survive, she'll have to reckon with the monsters of her past and a darkness built into the university's very walls。 Thick with history and packed with Bardugo's signature twists, Hell Bent brings to life an intricate world of magic, violence, and all too real monsters。 I reread Ninth House before Hell Bent, so I had so many things I was looking forward to。 Namely, how Alex's and Dawes's relationship would evolve。 Leigh Bardugo 100% delivers on the found family trope in Hell Bent。 Not only do Alex and Dawes grow to become sisters of sorts, but Bardugo spends a lot of time developing Alex's relationship to Turner, and to Mercy, who is someone we didn't see a lot of in Ninth House。 I loved how we got to learn more about these characters' pasts as they embark on this crazy journey。 I adored how the found family worked in this book, and I just wish there was more! Of course, the biggest question this book poses is the question of Darlington, and Bardugo answers in true Bardugo fashion。 I didn't want things to be easy for Alex and crew, and it certainly wasn't, in the most painful way。 All the hoops they have to jump through makes the reunion that much sweeter。 I was so gratified by the journey of Darlington's escape—the plot was well paced, the rituals felt really dark, and the ending is well-earned without being perfect。 Essentially, Bardugo brings her trademark plotting skills to this book, and it was well worth the wait。The entire book is steeped in New Haven history and lore。 When I first read Ninth House, I didn't fully appreciate all of the language in it related to literature and New Haven, because I was just so hungry for Leigh's writing and the characters。 Once I reread it, though, I had a deep appreciation for how the literature and lore added to the story。 I have a feeling that when I reread Hell Bent (which is a book that demands to be reread, honestly), I'm going to have a similar experience。 Because I was so focused on Darlington's return, there was a lot that went on around me that didn't quite make sense。 I hope on a reread, I'll have a greater appreciation for this element, but that's not to say that I didn't note how impressive and rich it made the book on a first read。Based on that ending, I am extremely (and maybe unduly) hopeful for another book in this universe。 I have fallen in love with Alex, Dawes, Turner, and Darlington, and want to know more, and see how they can reach a happier ending (if one even exists)。 Either way, I can't wait for more from Leigh Bardugo, and you can be sure that if she writes anything in the future, I will read it! *This review can also be found on my blog, toreadornottoreadnm。blogspot。com* 。。。more

The story didn't grip me quite as hard this time around and some bits of plot actually seemed like they were copied and pasted from the previous book。And speaking of plot: the slow pace was still very much present, but not quite as slow-moving as it was before。 There was some action throughout as the characters found themselves in some rather dangerous situations and had to deal with them via some Interesting means。 In regard to that, it was in those moments that the world-building really shone through。The main conflicts and such were all too familiar, though。 Alex had to solve some murders and then there was the Darlington of it all on top of it。 And。。。 the Darlington bits had pretty much no emotional impact on me? Maybe because certain things about it happened too quickly for me in the beginning while other parts of that subplot seemed to drag on forever during the rest of the book。 I also wasn't particularly fond of the twist and connection between Darlington and Alex because it seemed very ordinary and obvious, personally。(And I find Darlington such a bland character。)I'm left with little desire to continue the series, but I think I will give the next book a try。 I was just a bit disappointed that the elements that made me love Ninth House so much seemed to be missing--or were sidelined--here。 The writing also didn't strike me as powerful and beautiful this time around like I thought it was going to lol 。。。more
